A committee, featuring 60 members, has been set up by The House of Representatives in Bangkok, in order to study the potential opening of entertainment venues, including casinos.

Much of this has come about due to the problems Thailand has faced with illegal casinos and illegal gambling, while also trying to boost the country's economy.

Last month, Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister, Somsak Thepsuthin spoke about the idea of legalising more gambling avenues to increase tax revenue,Table games to help those in need.

Move Forward Party list MP Rangsiman Rome is supportive of the committee, but spoke of how a similar body was set up by the previous House of Representatives to study this matter and that measures should be put in place to deal with any negative influence.

Loss of income was underlined by United Thai Nation Party list MP Chatchawal Kong-udom, as a reason behind supporting the notion, with a lot of people from Thailand travelling to neighbouring countries access casino gambling.

He also explained that setting up five venues with casinos across the country would also help to provide jobs for people in Thailand.

There was no objection to the ideas set out in the debate, with House Speaker Wan Muhamad Noor Matha then setting up the 60-member committee to study the opening of the venues, with the committee given 90 days to complete its task.
